Chewing tobacco caused issues on two different occasions. While
Miss ______ was selling quilt raffle tickets as a fund raiser
for the new library, _______ casually spat his wad of chewing
tobacco too close to the quilt.
|
His tobacco juice stained the quilt and the stains could
not be removed. Meanwhile in another part of town, Mrs.
_____ was sporting her brand new patent leather shoes. She
met up with ______ who also spat his tobacco onto the boardwalk
and splashed onto her new shoes.

Bylaws require people to behave in different ways (like not spitting in public, or not playing pool after 6 pm on a weeknight, and the curfew bylaw.) And, what might have been going on to make the town pass a bylaw about spitting? Didn't people just know that you shouldn't spit on each other?
Did you know.
Health Canada looks at the Tobacco Bylaw Across Alberta: Cardston achieved a GOLD level in 2002. "Smoking prohibited in all public places, including restaurants, bars, billiard halls, bingo halls, bowling alleys." http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/hc-ps/tobac-tabac/about-apropos/role/municip/ab-eng.php
Spitting Out Doors
Spitting in MagrathA time when people spat on the ground and then people had a problem with it getting everywhere and who was going to clean it up. So a woman called Wanda Gibbons decided to put a stop to it with making a bylaw. This is a fun story about a cowboy who spits on a lovely quilt that Wanda made to help raise money for the library. They get in a fight and Wanda takes it to town counsel and Bill rides off to go herd cattle. |

Students' Podcast
Students drew from the primary resources of the bylaw website to help them understand the history of their town. Working in groups students examined these historical bylaws. Questions they used to guide them were:
Have laws and bylaws changed over time?
How have they affected the people involved?
What evidence is there that old bylaws still exist today?
What story do they have to tell?
How have these bylaws impacted the people in our community?
