Glenwood, Alberta

glenwood mapGlenwood is a small village nestled on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains in the county of Cardston. 280 people proudly call Glenwood, Alberta, home.

Like other towns in Alberta, Glenwood has a local government.  Like the structure of other local governments, Glenwood's local government is related directly to its population size.  Glenwood's town council consists of a mayor, deputy mayor and three councilors.

There are governing laws that are a part of each community in Alberta.  Each community has it’s own laws and bylaws. Glenwood is no different. In fact, Glenwood posts some of its bylaws online for all to see.

Bylaws are local government laws that apply to all citizens.  Everyone must follow these local laws or face a warning or fine.  Communities pass their own bylaws to make sure that their community is safe and runs smoothly.  Everyone in each community is expected to know the bylaws of their community.

New bylaws are passed and changes can be made at council meetings.  Stay tuned next year as students at Glenwood School explore some of the historical bylaws of Glenwood.  They will be investigating what has changed and which new ones been created.  In preparation for this inquiry into Glenwood's bylaws, the students explored the question, What is a bylaw?
