Student Experts… a Historical Perspective

Cardston

Like all countries, Canada has a history.  By studying about our history, we learned about the traditions and values that are important to Canadians today.  We think that history is something like our memory; it is the record of what has happened in the past. Knowing about our past helps us to understand the present.  It also helps us imagine what the future might hold.

We, the students of Cardston studied many forms of government from the Ancient Greeks to the way municipal bylaws of Cardston shape our community.  Looking at the historical bylaws of Cardston gave us another insight into who we are, how life was then, how it has changed and impacted us today.

Over time, the characteristics and bylaws that once were in place have changed.  We all have a role to understand the past in order to be part of the future.

We examined the following bylaws:

  • animal
  • driving
  • littering
  • parking
  • pound
  • smoking

The Bylaws we would like to present to you are "The Pound Bylaws” and the “Parking Bylaws."    We ask, "What do these bylaws mean for our community?  Do they still exist?  Have they changed over time?"  Perhaps you have bylaws in your community that will interest you.
