Finding Out

We needed to understand more about the culture and stories surrounding the Inuksuk. This meant we had to do research. We read a lot and searched the Internet. We were very lucky to connect with people from the Arctic Institute

  • Our Roots Resources
We needed to find some information to get us started. When we looked at historic books we were astounded at the way the resources showed the Inuit people. It really showed how our early culture did not look at the Inuit people the same way we do today. ###Sam's piece goes here.
  • Glenbow Museum
Our visit to the Glenbow Museum showed that we were right about some things we had learned. It also made us think of many new questions that we needed to answer.
  • Northern Communication
We wanted to be sure we were respectful and accurate. Through Mrs. Crystal Burgess of the Arctic Institute in Nunavit, we met Mark Kalluak, a respected Inuit elder. We had a long telephone conference call with him and he answered a lot of our questions. One of our questions was how could we build an Inuksuk here at our school while respecting and honouring the Inuit culture.
###Tape converted to quicktime audio of conversation.
  • Inuksuk - an Artist's Eye
Mr. Jeremy Mayne, our school's resident artist, worked with all of the classes in the school to explore different ways of representing our work. Our leadership group studied different ways of representing Inuksuit (Inuksuit is plural for Inuksuk).
  • Sharing with our school
One of the goals of the leadership group was to involve the entire school in this project. The quicktime slide show shows how we started with the Kindergarten group.
  • Designing our Inuksuk
Once we had some images in our mind of what our Inuksuk looked like, we took pebbles and sticks and built models to help us imagine what the final shape would be.
  • Selecting our Inuksuk
Once we selected the site at the school, we took our final Inuksuit candidates and digitally placed them so we could see what they looked like.
  • Here is our work so far
This flash movie shows what we think our process is now. We are getting close to the building stage.
