When
we went to the Glenbow museum, our guide, the Director of the Glenbow,
led us behind the scenes on the eighth floor. The passage to this
floor was hard to come by and required particular security. How
special was that! The Director told us lots of interesting stories
about the Inuit culture. It was important to us because it helped
us to understand the significance of an Inuksuk within their culture.
We were given the opportunity to handle many precious artifacts
from the Inuit exhibit the Glenbow had held shortly before we made
our appointment. Wearing special white gloves insured that the
artifacts were not harmed by oils on our fingers. The Director
told us many things about the inuit style of life. For example,
when the Iinuits hunted in the arctic, they hunted different animals
in different seasons. Their lifestyle evolved around these animals
in every season. Quite amazing! When we were finished, we took
a moment to reflect on what we had learned and to look around at
their current arctic exhibit.
We left the Glenbow Museum with
a powerful understanding
of the Inuit culture and
the sacredness of the
honorable project we were about to begin.
