Finding Out: Communication with Northern Friends
Crystal Burgess, Arctic Institute and Mark Kalluak, Elder
A telephone conference call with Crystal Bergis visiting from the Arctic
Institute and Mark Kalluak who was at the Arctic Instutute gave us an
opportunity to ask questions about the Innuit culture. Mark was able
to share perspectives from the people on the land and how they actually
create Inuksuks. We learned some important notions about culture. The
need to be respectful of other cultures is important. The exchange of
cultural symbols fosters connections and we are striving to create connections
that will be life-lasting. We want to ensure we honor the originators
of the Inuksuk as we move to create our Inuksuk. We are adopting the
symbol from the North and bringing it South so that, "people will
know we were here". As we continue with our work, we will be putting
sound recordings of our conversation with Mr. Kalluak.
