High River Student Story 3:
High River Cemetery

Hello.

Breaking news, High River Cemetery still alive? I’m here with Heather Noyles, the ground keeper of the cemetery. Can you tell me, are there any important people buried here?

Well, there aren’t any celebrities but there is Guy Weadick. He started the Stampede.

Now, tell me, why is he important?

He started the Stampede with three other gentlemen and then he was buried in High River because his second wife lived in High River. His wife was also a famous opera singer. George Lane is also buried here as you know there is a park named after him in little High River.

Yes, that is very interesting. Now, are there any so called bodies buried in the cemetery that were murder victims?

Yes, a lady was married and her husband wanted her land but she refused to give it to him. He went out and killed her one day. She walked out of the house, and there he was with a shotgun aimed right at her head and the whole neighborhood was watching along with the police officer, but it was too late. By the time the officer could react, she was dead. I could tell you more, but it is personal information, such as her name.

Do you think that she haunts the town looking for help?

Yes, I believe so.

Interesting….About the cemetery itself.

A race track was supposed to be built where the cemetery is now but nobody wanted to be, it to be like that so they made a small track in barrel grounds. Also the cemetery has been moved back so some  bodies are probably under the road.

Thank you for your time and information. It makes us all think – High River Cemetery, still alive?

I’m Emma Evans keeping you in the look with EHE news broadcast.
