High River Student Story 1:
High River

Hi. I’m Kate and I’m here with ranchers Johnny and Ted, at the High River Rodeo grounds. What made you start doing the Little Britches Rodeo?

We started the Little Britches Rodeo because we wanted the kids to have a place to compete against each other using the skills of some of them learned on their ranches and farms.

We also had adult rodeos so adults could get together to enjoy each other’s company and compete using their many skills used on a ranch.

When was the first Little Britches Rodeo?

Well, the first Little Britches Rodeo started in 1959 and it was the first kid’s rodeo in Canada. It has been going ever since.

Why was it called the Little Britches Rodeo?

Well, Britches are pants and kids are smaller. So the name “the little britches” just fits.

Have the Rodeo grounds always been where they are today?

When the Rodeo grounds were built you could see it south of where Spitzee Elementary is today.

That was some interview. Thanks for having me.

See you at the Rodeo.
