Eden Valley Student Story 2:
The Daniels Name

Hi, my name is Andy Daniels. I work at the Chief Jacob Bearspaw School. I am the culture teacher here.

Where does the Daniels name come from?

It comes from my Great-Great-Grandfather. Before that the Daniels weren’t Daniels, they were known as “Bendo”. My Great-Great-Grandpa, his name was Daniel Bendo, he was a pretty important guy, I guess. So they started naming us after him. So we’re Daniels.

So, traditionally, how do Stoney people get their first name?

It’s just the way they see them, the way- they way you appear to them. It’s how they get their traditional names. Their first names now, we’re all using European names.

Okay, what are some traditional Stoney names?

It’s the way you appear to them. Like Ear, came from a guy with real big Ears, it’s the way you appear to them. And they still call him Ears. Just the way you appear to them.
