Red Deer Lake - Community - Student Story 2:
United Church

Red Deer Lake United Church has been around since 1893. When it was called Red Deer Lake Station, it started out as a group of community members that met in people’s homes and basements. In 1909 a small church was built called Red Deer Lake Presbyterian Church. It was on the north side of the highway.

In 1985 the church was moved to the south side of the highway because the highway was being expanded. When it was moved an extension was built onto the tiny church because they needed more room for all the new people in the community.

In 2004 an even bigger extension was built on so it could hold a large number of people. The church is used for church services every Sunday, Sunday School, weddings, funerals, plays and concerts, parties, dinners, as well as youth groups like Scouts, Brownies, Sparks, Girl Scouts, and other community groups. The church also does a lot of generous things for the less fortunate people in the community.

In 2007 the church changed its name to Red Deer Lake Midlands United Church of Canada when another church came to join it.

The church is important for our community because it provides a place for the people to get together and meet in the Red Deer Lake community.

In the future there may be more people in our area. Maybe even a bigger extensions will be built.
