Millarville Senior Story 2:
Millarville

Bob at that time drove an old what was called a Shooting Break which was a like a big old heavy all in one sort of like a SUV a big old station wagon.  Reverend Gant who was the minister at the time, had a little Volkswagen Beetle. He came from Black Diamond also. So I asked Reverend Gant if we could cross the creek down where Mrs. Stabler says the Ford down there. But there was no cement Ford in those days there was just the creek and the water had been so high.  And reverend Gant said yes we can easily cross the creek and I can go back and forth.  But like I said he had a little Beetle Volkswagen and we were in this great big heavy car.

And you come up over the hill when you go down the back road; you come up over the hill and look down on to the creek.  And my sister and sister in law and brother in law and their heavy old car was sitting right in the middle of the creek.  And we all gasped. And Bob said, “Oh don’t worry we’ll can make it there we don’t have to worry we’re just fine.” Well we got exactly neck to neck with Howard and Alice Hampton when down we went.

My bridesmaid and I were sitting in the back seat with our long dresses up around our necks so they would hopefully stay dry. Eventually Joe Preston and Charlie King happened to come along. So Charlie just walked back up the hill and a little ways to his farm and came back with a tractor and he got us pulled out. He pulled us ahead so we were closer to the church we were on the other side of the river by then.

And Janet had put a lovely white sheet on the seat of the car so that Jenny and I wouldn’t get our dresses all wet or all dirty and we got out to get things straightened around when we got to the other side of the creek. And my mother had been watching.  And we took the sheet off the seat because it was so wet and wrang it out and my poor mother thought it was my weeding dress that I was wringing out. Which it wasn’t. So we got to the church an hour late by this time the bride the best man and the groom were getting rather agitated and thinking we weren’t going to show up and so everything would be off but that wasn’t the case.
