Melrose Community Student Story 2

This is Judy reporting from Calgary on C TV news
I am here with Billy Sierra and Kelsey, they are here to talk to us about the Melrose area and families that used to live there.
J -Kelsey could you tell us how Melrose got its name.
K -Melrose got its name from a family from Scotland; they wanted some Scottish culture here so they named this area Melrose. The family’s last name was Curry.  Melrose is also a place in Scotland.
J – That was very interesting. Billy how about you tell us about what working was like back in the old days.
B - There was very little money back then so they would get about 1 or 2 cents an hour for all their hard labor. And for the whole day of working they would get just 12 to 24 cents a day.
J - That is not a lot of money. I wonder how they managed to survive off that? Serria, can you tell us about their houses items inside of them?
S - Well one house was really crammed because it could only fit a family of four because, there were only 2 rooms per house and the Andrews’ house was very busy because it was a boarding house for schoolteachers. One house cost about 48 dollars and house items were about 95 cents to $ 5.75. That is not a lot of money for us now but it was a lot then.
