Longview Student Story 3:
Longview - Mount Burke

Mount Burke is one of the many mountains you can see from Longview! Mount Burke was named by Duncan Cameron. On the top of Mount Burke there was a very small firehouse called Cameron Lookout. Cameron Lookout was built to keep everyone safe and aware if there was a fire! The only way you could get supplies like food and water was a packhorse. On the little house there was a lightning rod in case of lightning storms! It was built in 1929.

I do have one story about Mount Burke! One night there was a huge storm with lighting and thunder it was raining and windy too! Then 5 lighting strikes hit the fire house! The firehouse did not burn down it didn’t even start on fire!

Years later the firehouse was abandoned because it was too high up into the clouds so they could see nothing but clouds.

If you decide to take a trip to Mount Burke you can still visit the firehouse. I think it is a four hour hike up the mountain. I have heard there is a trail up the mountain too! At the top of Mount Burke it is extremely rocky rough and very steep and there is no trail left at the top.
