Davisburg school - Student Senior Story 1

The first school in Davisburg, I m sure if you ve got your book you ve had a picture of it and it was just a wood frame building, and a little wee addition was added and that was where the teacher lived. She lived right at the school, so she didn t have to walk or drive to school in the morning. Now, there was only I believe two or three teachers who used that little facility, otherwise when I went to school   I went to school there for two years- that teacher drove all the way out from Calgary, which at that time was a very long drive and took her at least an hour and a half to get out to school every morning to teach us. And that school district was approximately six miles by six miles, and it was kept to that size so that the children did not have to walk any further than, hopefully if it was centered, more than three miles to get to school. So that s why there were so many of these little districts named out here.

Do you know I rode to school the first two years   I was one of the lucky ones who still got to go to a country school and I rode my horse to school. It was one room. To heat the school there was a big wooden stove at the back, which certain of the children were responsible for keeping the wood in so we kept warm. We had one teacher, and she taught all the grades from, there was no kindergarten at that time, but they taught all the grades from grade one to nine. And she d work with us, each grade separately through the day and we were given our job and then she d go on to the other grades. Yeah It was fun, we had a lot of fun.
