More Task Ideas

Through Other Eyes

Often people who act heroically are not aware that their actions are seen that way by others. Go inside the mind of one of the characters in "The Fellowship of the Ring" and explain how he or she saw Frodo as an unlikely hero. This could take the form of a diary, a journal, a ballad, or even a conversation between one or more characters. You decide.

For example you create this from the point of view of:
Gandalf, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Arwen, Galadrial, Gimli, Sam

Film Character Study

Elijah Wood's portrayal of Frodo as the unlikely hero in the film version of "The Fellowship of the Ring" earned him the 2002 Best Actor Award at the Empire Awards in England, and an MTV Movie Award nomination for Best Actor.

Study Elijah Wood's portrayal of Frodo in this film. Consider questions such as:

  • What would an actor need to bring to this role of the unlikely hero?
  • How well does his performance fit the image of the unlikely hero?
  • Do you think that he deserved these awards?

Heroes: Truth or Hype?

Some people believe that heroes and the idea of heroism are dead in our modern culture. If this is true, how do we explain the huge popularity of some recent blockbuster movies such as "Gladiator" or "The Patriot"? Did these characters have the true qualities of real heroes or is it all just Hollywood hype?

Analyze two recent movies of your choice that contain images of heroism and decide if they portray true heroes.

The Hero's Call

Have you ever had an experience when you were "called" or "led" to do something that required courage? To be heroic? It may not have been as dramatic as destroying the Ring of Power, but you were probably frightened, confused and unsure. And yet you found that inner strength and you're a hero to somebody.

Describe the event and what you learned about yourself.
