High River Student Story 1:
Spitzee School

Spitzee School was originally constructed in 1912 and cost twenty-five thousands dollars to build. It is a beautiful building and its design is called classical revival style. If you look closely at the school you will notice lovely pieces of sandstone around the windows and orangey red brick along the walls.

The present Spitzee Elementary was built in three parts. As mentioned, the first school was built in 1912. Spitzee School is a wonderful school, but it hasn’t always been an elementary. In 1912 it was the High River High School and had grades nine, ten, eleven, and twelve. Some sources claim that it also has one and two. Before 1912 there wasn’t even a school on Macleod Trail. Instead there was a church where Spitzee Elementary used to be. That was the Chalmers Presbyterian Church.
