Eden Valley Student Story 3:
Animals - Coyote

Hi, my name is Paige Dickson, and I am studying the coyote.

Why is the coyote referred to as a coward?

Because it tends to run away from people, and it looks timid. He is also known as the trickster.

Where does the coyote come from?

The Great Spirit

Are they important to the Stoney people?

Someway, yes, because he is the weather messenger.  He lets us know of any harsh weather or a snowstorm or anything that’s happening a day ahead.

How does he do that?

He howls at the moon.

Is the coyote sacred?

Yes, because it is believed he can sing many songs, even a special song call (?)

How did the coyote get its Stoney name?

He got his Stoney name, (awaawan), for howling at the moon. Because that’s the song he makes when he cries.
