Black Diamond - Senior Stories 2

What is your favorite childhood memory?

Oh, I have lots of them. I guess the Christmas concerts. They Christmas concerts were wonderful, and in a one room school house it was great because you could have, you had the little grade ones doing their poems and their little verses and singing songs and then some of the students wrote the plays that we put on. And we would hang sheets at the front of the classroom to kind of make a stage. And the sheets- it was quite a production to get them in. Like here, where would you put sheets? But we made it work and some of the fathers would come in and help. They d build something and help us with that. The Christmas concerts were always great fun, so were the school picnics. We always had a school picnic at the end of the year. Sometimes it was at the school, and I can remember several when we went to the park in Okotoks. So it was wonderful.

What games did you guys play at recess?

We played baseball. We played scrub. And at recess time when the bell, when we were let out it was a race to get out there because whoever touched the base first that was the batter. Then the next one was the batter. The next one played catcher. That’s how we determined who would take the places on the field, and when one of the batters went out, everybody would move up. Sometimes we would keep track of it in the day, and we would remember who was in those positions, and we would hold them for the day. And in the wintertime we played a lot of fox and goose, out in the snow. And we’d take soccer wasn’t great, but we did have a soccer ball. And in the spring it was marbles.  As soon as the snow melted and there was a little patch of dry ground out came the marbles and jacks. How many of you know what jacks are? The little yeah - And that was very popular. And the skipping ropes came out. So in the spring time that’s what we did and then there was baseball.
