Ability to summarize the Ancient Story

Able to summarize the complete story with accuracy. Is able to identify the facts that need to be addressed in the summary. Able to partially summarize the story with some accuracy. Leaves out some of the important facts of the story. Unable to summarize the story as the student tends to retell. Adds in information about the story that is not necessary to a summary.

Purpose of the story

Able to identify the story type and the purpose (ie.enjoyment, lesson, history) of the native people as found in the story. Able to identify the story type but is unable to expand to demonstrate understanding of the purpose (ie.enjoyment, lesson, history) of the native people that is found in the story. Is not able to identify the story type or purpose (ie. enjoyment, lesson, history) of the native people as found in the story.

Use of expressive language

Uses expressive and vivid imagery through out. Minimal use of basic vocabulary. Generally uses basic vocabulary but there is some evidence of beginning imagery. Uses basic vocabulary throughout with little or no imagery.

Connections with the culture (4, circles, mother earth, respect)

Is able to identify several of the cultural aspects of the native people read in the story. Is able to identify some of the cultural aspects of the native people read in the story. Is not able to identify any of the cultural aspects of the native people read in the story.
