Student Reflections

Riley: “I like when we get to use the video cameras.  I took video of the Buttes.  It is important to take these pictures because other people need to know what they look like.  We walked around the Buttes all the way to the top.  It was very high up.  When I was at the top I saw a hole at the end of the surface.  It looked like a dark hole, I took video of it.  It looks different at the top of the Buttes than at the bottom of the Buttes.  It was a very long walk. We worked with an artist, Maureen Enns. We drew leaves that we saw.  We used charcoal, like Maureen does.  We drew what we saw on the land. Alvin came to our class and talked to us.  He sang some songs.  I danced when he was drumming.  He teaches us how to take care of ourselves.  He told me to have respect for my parents.  It is important because one day they may be gone and then who will here for us.”

Bobbie: “I think this project is important because other people will learn what we are learning.  It is important so that others can learn about our land, our culture and our clans.  I am finding out who my clan is.  IT is important to know about your clan so that we know our identity.  Identity is who we are, it is about our Indian culture.  We need to know these things so we can keep passing them on. It is important to pass these on so that we can remember. We got to work with students from the high school.  They helped me tell my story.  They videotaped and recorded my story.  Now others will be able to hear it. It is important to know about history so we can know about our language.”

Nicholas:  “I am learning how to use video cameras.  It has been fun.  Learning how to use video cameras is fun because we get to film things so that other people can see and watch and learn about our planet.  By doing this we are teaching people how to take care of our planet.  If we don’t take care of our planet the world might be gone.  Things like pollution in the air and there is   garbage is all over.  We don’t want our planet to disappear. If we tell others about the land maybe we can help.”

Leona:  “I loved working with the artist.  I am very shy and I found out that I am good at art and the rest of my class thinks I am good at art.  I love to take pictures and then sketch them.  Judy showed me how to work with the charcoals, I even took some home.  Using the charcoals make the sketches look like they are still in nature, the flowers actually look like they are blowing in the wind.  I discovered something about myself through this project and know I can do good work.”

Nicole:  “I like using the video cameras.  I video taped when we were out on the hills.  We walked to the top of the Buttes. It was good to take pictures of the cliffs.  It was a very long walk. The wind was blowing.  You should see some of the pictures.  We are learning about our Blackfoot names and the clans we came from.”

Tex:  “This morning when Narcisse was here talking, he was talking about a blood clot and when they were going to cook it they heard something crying and they grabbed the blood clot and it was really a baby crying.  It starting saying “raise me up to the roof five times.”  Every time they did it he got bigger and bigger and he grew up to be a man.  This story is important because it ells a bit of our history and culture.  I like using the technology and I don’t get to do this kind of work at home.  I really like the video cameras and digital cameras.  We took pictures of the Buttes and work in the classroom.  Using technology will help me learn and then others will learn too.”

Mackenzie: “I really like using the technology like the ipods, cameras and video cameras.  Filming the land around us is going to help others learn things they don’t know about the Blackfoot people.  I have learned to tell the story of who I am ,  now I know my grandparents,  great grandparents and my clan.  It is important to know our stories.  Maybe we can help others to learn how to tell their stories.”

Roan:  “Today Narcisse Blood came and talked to us.  I liked the story of Napi and the Rocks.  I like using the technology because it helps us take pictures of things out in the land.  That is important so that we can re-tell history.  The land is important so we can re-tell our history.  The land is so important.”

Chayla:  “I like to be able to use all the technology.  It helps me learn in a different way.  It helps us help other people learn.  We take the pictures and tell the stories then other people can hear them and learn them too.  I liked the stories Narcisse blood told us today.  It helped me to understand some Blackfoot words that I did not know before.  I remembered some things about Napi that I forgot.  We learned some Mi’kmaq games today from Barb.  I liked the games, they are another type of first Nation people and their games are different than ours.”
