Blackfoot Discoveries: Blackfoot Stories: Thunder and Raven

Our summary of the Ancient Story told by;
Brayden, Christian & James

One summer day Thunder struck the tipi of an old man and his wife with lightning bolts because he was jealous. He took the man's wife to his home in the mountains because he wanted someone to take care of him. The old man called upon all of the animals and asked them to help him and they all refused because they were afraid of Thunder's power. Raven was not scared of Thunder so he decided to help the old man. Raven challenged Thunder to a fighting match. Thunder struck Raven with dangerous lightning bolts and Raven used his own power by flapping his wings and calling on the cold North wind and snow. Thunder surrendered the old man's wife and they made an agreement that Winter was Raven's time and Summer was Thunder's time.

What did we hear in this story that we have heard in other stories?

  • Animals talk and help people.
  • Nature talks in the form of thunder.
  • There is always a problem to be solved.

Why was this story told? We think this story teaches us ...

  • Not to steal and that stealing is wrong.
  • That jealousy is not good because it makes you want to have something that someone else has.
  • To help others who might need our help like Raven helped the old man.
