Tug-of-War

Tug-of-WarOral Communication by Dr. Reg Crowshoe

"The Tug-of-War, I ah um, I used to see the challenges between the men and the women of Stampede. They used to have challenges and these challenges were, you know, good relations and have fun. But the first time I remember seeing a Tug-of-War and I think the Tug-of-War is a white man concept, where two sides pull on a rope and there's a ribbon on the rope and a mark on the ground that you have to pull where you have to pull one side over that mark or the other side. But it was also a challenge of strength and anyway the men and women in camp - the women used to challenge the men to a Tug-of-War and all the men. I remember I was young when I first seen this but all the men got together and the women got on the other end of the Tug-of-War rope and they'd start pulling on this rope. Eventually I think I can remember more times the women winning the Tug-of-War pulling the men across this line and they're all hanging on and yelling and then at the end they'd all laugh and congratulate each other but then it was a cool story or a story you could say for the year that all year I can say that we beat the men and then the next year the men would challenge the women again and the same day at the last day of Stampede they'd put the rope out and the women would get together and the men and they'd have another Tug-of-War challenge and again I'd see the women beating the men and then they'd tease the men. They're calling them skinny and they're calling them they weren't tough and they were big talkers and so on and they teased each other all year again until the next year the men challenged the women again and then they would have a Tug-of-War and this time the men would win and then they would start teasing the women and the women would say we let you win, we let you win and the men would say no, no you let had your strongest women and there was more women on your side but we still beat you. These challenges went on and on, on you know on some years at the Stampede that I can remember they had these challenges at the Stampede, everybody got involved from the teepee owners, the women and the men in the teepee owers and all the different teepees."
