PowWow

Singing

"In Native singing, there are a lot of different songs. Singing is for dancing, when people pass away, for people to heal from hurt and when people are sad. Sometimes people sing to spirits so people will be okay.

I liked Stampede School because I got to learn interesting facts from the Elders. I learned that I have a heritage to sing."

"How do singers get their songs?

The natives get their songs by trading eagle feathers with other Natives.

The designs on the shawls come from dreams or elders.

The headdress represents the chiefs when they wore them in the olden days. The teepees represent the homes of the Native people that lived in them. The drum is supposed to represent the heartbeat; it is used to sing and makes people feel good. When the people sing it sounds sad and happy like the flag song. I was thinking about pow wows when I saw the drum. I like drumming because I know I get to use the drum, the drum is also named great grandfather. You are given a picture for your shawl or you have them in a dream. The Fancy Dance also has a shawl that looks like a butterfly when you twirl it in the air."
