Building an Igloo
What We Did:
- Chose a building material
- Decided to work alone or in a group
- Built blocks out of dough or ghost gum
- Let them dry or harden
- Chose a material to join the blocks
What We Found
- Some of our igloos collapsed
- Some were fragile and broke
- Some of us had to use supports inside to try to build the
igloo
- The blocks were the wrong shape
- These blocks when piled on top were good for building a
tower, shape not a dome
- We couldn’t make our igloos stand without resorting to
a glue gun
What We Learned:
Building an
igloo is not as easy as it looks!!
- The material is very important – the Inuit like certain
snow conditions and a good site
- The blocks need to be the shape of a domino, not a square
- The building material needs to be soft enough to cut and
trim the blocks
- The laying of the blocks needs to start with a few wedge
shaped blocks
- The blocks need to spiral
- There is a "keystone" block to finish the roof
