Student Reflections and Writing

"Imagine a day when you are a historian, you would have to think a lot. You have to know all the stories and history to be a historian. We met some other students from the Piitoayis Family School, they are Blackfoot and they are my friends. We have a new history to tell. The history of Treaty Seven Nations and the Calgary Stampede is part of our new story"

"Listen to the historians. I wonder what it would be like to be in a school where you couldn’t learn about history. I think it is important to learn about Native history because it is special."

"It's important for me to be involved because you get to learn more about a long time ago than you used to. You hear more stories, legends, and games from a long time ago. The Stampede and people from all over the world get to learn about what happened to the Natives in the past. If the Indian Village was not a part of the Stampede then the Natives wouldn’t know about their culture and some believe the culture wouldn’t survive. Native people wouldn’t know who they are as people. They might only know themselves as the white people know themselves. I feel like our class is a group of kids who work with adults who work together to tell an important part of history that changed how people thought about our culture. If there were no Stampede then the elders wouldn’t be able to teach their children about their heritage."
