What are the implications of living in a democratic society
within a larger global context? Working closely with a specialist
in middle east politics from the University of Calgary, students
examined democracy in light of the invasion of Iraq. The study
culminated in a video conference where students from two different
cities presented and defended their positions around this
controversial topic. Follow the evolution of this inquiry
through the nine short video excerpts below. You may also

learning with the attitude that ‘we work, we
study, we research rather than we goof around until
the teacher tells us to calm down and get our books
out’."

9. Living and learning in a Knowledge Society
- "it required them to exercise judgment, to think critically, and to explore multiple forms of literacy."
- "They had to defend their ideas and communicate their understanding to an audience that went far beyond the classroom walls"
- "So it wasn’t something artificial where they just repeated something that they talked about with their peers."
- "I find this process is truly transformative"
- "I'm on a journey… I’m looking differently at my practice… even the way I interact with the students in the classroom is different from before. I truly have a collaborative learning environment and community. We’re all in there together and we’re figuring it out together sometimes on a daily basis."
