Web Pages

What are the enduring lessons and themes that emerge in our literature? How does literature reflect human experience?

Create a web site to illustrate one of the topics or themes that emerges in the novel Lord of the Flies. Combine images and details from the novel into a web based presentation to demonstrate understanding of the topic you have chosen. Use carefully selected images, colours, symbols, and written descriptions to enhance our understanding of your chosen topic.

Post Cards

In novels, the characters often discuss their relationships and ambitions. In reality they would have had the opportunity to share their dreams, concerns and feelings with others. Postcards are one means whereby individuals can express a few sentiments supported by a carefully chosen image to convey aspects of the situation that they are in. People select postcards when the picture on the card expresses or captures an insight that they have had or an experience they have had. Create a series of postcards using images and quotations from the novel to illustrate your understanding of one of the novel themes. Use multi-media software such as Powerpoint or Astound to present your collection of postcards to the class.

Character Role-play and Monologue Script

Create a script for a monologue featuring one of the most interesting characters in the novel. Use the script to role-play this character. Put him/her in an appropriate setting and then have him/her reflect on important incidents, issues, and relationships with others to demonstrate your understanding of the novel. Reveal the character's thoughts, feelings, and insights about one of the themes presented in the novel. Create a multi-media presentation using appropriate software such as Powerpoint or iMovie to illustrate key points presented in your monologue. You may wish to present a series of sketches or paintings presumably created by the character while marooned on the island.

Role-play and Dialogue Script

Create a script for a dialogue featuring two or three interesting characters in the novel. The setting could be a chance meeting somewhere, some years after the events in the novel. Include details from the novel to demonstrate your understanding of one of the novel's themes. You may wish to have the characters reminisce about events in the novel and relate them to current issues related to the theme. Consider the following: What are they doing now? How did the events from the novel and time period affect them? What did they learn? How do the events relate to more universal understandings such as the true nature of man and society? You may either role-play and videotape your script OR use presentation software such as Powerpoint to create an illustrated version of the script. You may wish to consider accompanying these images with either a voice track or reader's theatre type of presentation. The script must clearly reflect and demonstrate one of the novel themes.

Multi-media Presentation

Create a multi-media presentation for the class using Powerpoint or other software. Use images that you scan from books or magazines or that you find on the Internet to graphically illustrate one of the themes related to the novel. Accompany the images with relevant quotations from the novel and your own insights to develop the theme. Your presentation should include enough evidence from the novel to demonstrate a thoughtful understanding of your theme.
