Sports Activities in the Millarville Community

There were lots of sports in the Millarville Community. The homesteaders liked to play polo, cricket, hockey, tennis, race horses, soccer, football, boxing and skating. They worked very hard and they liked to play hard.

Polo and cricket were very popular in Millarville. Teams came from all over to play on the polo field which is now the playground of the Millarville Community School. There are images at the Glenbow Museum.

Horse Racing was at the Millarville Race Track which is the oldest race track in Canada. It is over 100 years old. There is a special dirt road to get to the Millarville Race Track. Some people would come for 2 days. It was fun.

Tennis was another sport that the homesteaders liked to play. This sport came from Europe and it was a favorite. There were tennis courts at the school by the Sheep River.

Hockey was played on the frozen ponds at the Fordville School. The Millarville team played against the team from Priddis. It took a long time to travel to the games and so there were always meals for everyone and sometimes they would stay and play cards. It was fun for everyone.
