"The following story written by a grade 2/3 student in October demonstrates an understanding of engagement, richness of word pictures, emotions and feelings."

Memories By Rebekah

One extremely hot day my friends came over to play. We played for the whole day but in the afternoon my mom called me in. She said, "you're so dirty you look like a pig. Go have a bath right now young lady!" So I had a bath. It was really boring. I wanted to make it interesting so I swam around and blew bubbles. When I got out I lay in my bed and looked closely at my quilt. I began to tell stories to myself about the pieces of material on the quilt and how they were from the clothes I used to wear. When I was a baby I used to wear my nightgown all the time. I wore my spider web dress to school or to church. It felt like I was in heaven. There was a piece of my overalls, which I used to wear when I rode my horse at the age of four. There was also a piece of my working dress that I wore when I was six. A piece of my overall shirt was also there. The tablecloth that we used when I was seven also had some small squares attached to the quilt. There was also a small square from my heart dress that I wore for my grandparent's anniversary when I was eight. I soon feel asleep under all the clothes I used to wear and the memories that they hold.
