Field Trip to the Chemical and Biological Protection Center for Canada's Department of National Defense - Suffield, Alberta

We were able to visit a chemistry lab where they make and test chemical agents, tour the facility and see where biological agents are tested and see what types of counter terrorist training is available on the base.

We saw some chemical agents, held anthrax that had been killed, and saw lots of really interesting equipment. We did hands on testing of chemical agents like they do in the field.

Holding dead anthrax spores!
Scientist Scott showing us the chemical agent supply.
Examining a biohazard protective suit.
Testing a simulated chemical agent to see what type of agent it is: blistering agent, nerve agent, blood agent.

Student quotes:

"I enjoyed learning about mustard, sarin, and VX in the chemistry lab and doing the tests to see if a solution was a nerve or blistering agent. I also liked trying on the gas mask!" ~Nathan

"Suffield gave me the knowledge to possibly attempt following an ambition to become a biochemist in Canada."

"My favourite part of the trip would have to be when I could actually see the chemical agents and know that there were just two layers of glass keeping it contained from me. I also found the biohazard agents really interesting and I was hoping to see ebola but I didn't; but that's ok. It was great!" ~Kristyne

"I enjoyed the chemical part of it and trying on the gas masks. It was also neat that we got to see dead anthrax." ~Laurie

"I enjoyed using the chemical detector and the paper to test what type of chemical agent was present. I also enjoyed trying on the gas mask." ~Michelle

It was fun doing some hands-on experiments and checking out the different equipment in the laboratories." ~Randall
