CORRESPONDENCE FROM DR. CAM BOULET:

Dear Crystal,

June 18, 2002

This is a most impressive project for your chemistry class and what a most creative way to bring science and public issues together for students.
Please expect some further follow up from me in the next few days/weeks.

Unfortunately the school year ends soon (I believe) but I would like to talk further with you about this project. It is very encouraging to see the interest demonstrated by students, their rapid gasp of the issues, as well as your innovative approach to education!

Please pass on my personal congratulations on their efforts.

Hi Crystal,

June 27, 2002

The last few days have been intense. We have just completed the review of the proposals that were submitted and frankly, many of you students would have outbid several of the submissions.

I was extremely impressed by the initiative you have shown and the quality of the information the class put together. I liked how it tied science to national policies and issues. Developing the link between the esotericism of chemistry ( I memorized the periodic table, eventually got a PhD in chemistry, and if you asked me today to get past He I couldn't) and the real implications of the science and its impact on political or economic issues. It should also help inspire students into science careers. Hopefully some students will se past the economic attraction of medicine or dentistry and pursue true sciences.

Our communications group was also impressed with the initiative. In recognition of the students' efforts, we have prepared certificates for each member of the class. Regretfully they may not get there in time for presentation in the year end awards ceremony but it could be good start to the new year.

Thanks for letting share some of the excitement and enthusiasm you have generated in your teaching. It helped keep us inspired as we worked through the last few arduous weeks.
