Intelligence Online

IO is a design process that enables teachers to create learning experiences that steward the life of the mind. Teachers are expertly guided through a process to create project-based inquiries, develop assessment, choreograph a complex learning environment and communicate with peers, parents and students.

"Schools ought to be about the life of the mind. They should foster intellectual habits of thought, meaning-making and discourse in all students, rich and poor, gifted and severely ordinary. Intellect, in this light, is not just braininess, and is certainly not the conditioned right answer giving that passes in too much of the public mind as "achievement". More broadly defined, intellect represents the complexity of understanding, critique, and imagination of which the human mind is capable."

(Clifford and Friesen, 2001, The Stewardship of the Intellect)

Artistry of the Land, Ancient Stories, and Art of our First Nations People
Four classes of grade 2 & 3 students from 3 non-native schools located just south and west of Calgary, Alberta were interested in learning about the culture of the First Nations People of their area. They wanted to experience the importance of the land and also the artistry of the ancient stories, clothing, dwellings and artifacts of the Blackfoot, Stoney and T'Suu Tina people. This project won the 2001-02 SIGTel Online Learning Award.

Coming To Answers In Different Ways
Students from three schools in the Foothills School Division are embarking on a Math Conversation. The students and the teachers of these schools investigate math problems and discuss various strategies as they arrive at "a solution".

The purpose of this project is to talk about Math. What do we know? What do we need to know? What have we learned? How does this relate to our personal experiences? A math problem will be posted and an online threaded discussion about the math process between the schools will begin. The discussions will be monitored, summarized and posted by the students and teachers.
