History of Cowboy Culture

Trail Riding

The story of the trail riding was "uncovered" by visiting and interviewing local ranchers and historians at the Bar U Ranch, reading stories, listening to the lyrics of cowboy music and talking about the powerful images in cowboy poetry. Scripts were written, rehearsed and then filmed at the Bar U Ranch, by grade 3 students at RDL School. Through their voices and stories, the culture of the daily life of the cowboy, the challenges of this life, and the drive and desire of the cowboy will be truly understood.

Storytelling by the campfire

Transcript:

"Long 20 hour days. Yah it was the roughest toughest day of the week. Yah waking up at 4:00 and getting all the cattle and finding them a place to graze. My hands hurt form lifting up my hat and doin all those hand signals. And holding on to the tight reins all day. Never mind your hands my legs hurt from rubbin up against the saddle and the horse."

Dragmen

"Oh I'm not feeling so good."

"What's the matter?"

"Being a dragman is such a horrible job. Sucking up all that dust and dung that the cow left behind. And oh I think I swallowed a fly."

"Maybe we should get her a doctor?"

"But there aren’t any doctors around or towns. We are in the middle of nowhere."

"I like my job all you can see is cows and horses and calves."

Cattle Rustlers

"When all the cow rustlers come and try to steal your cattle that are what I don't like. My fingers hurt from firing my gun all day."

"I hate rounding up those cows. Don't you?"

"I like my job a little bit because we get a little fresh air. Right!"

Pointer

"I like being a pointer you get all the fresh air compared to those dragmen sniffing all that dung and smelling all that dust."

"And also you get to lead the way. not like the dragmen. They have to be at the back following everybody."

Trail Riders

"I remember yesterday when that cow almost got swept away in the river."

"Me too and I remember that thunderstorm two nights ago when the whole herd got spooked. You could snap your fingers and stomp your feet and they would still go running all over the place."

"You would have to ride by the chuck wagon all day smelling all that good food but the good part is you got first dibs on the food every night and morning."

"My favorite part of the day is when you get to sit around the campfire and eat dinner, bed down and go to sleep."

"Yah! That's my favorite part too."

"And also you get to lead the way. Not like the dragmen.
