History of Cowboy Culture

Fred Stimson and Herb Millar

The story of Fred Stimson and Herb Millar was "uncovered" by visiting and interviewing local ranchers and historians at the Bar U Ranch, reading stories, listening to the lyrics of cowboy music and talking about the powerful images in cowboy poetry. Scripts were written, rehearsed and then filmed at the Bar U Ranch, by grade 3 students at RDL School. Through their voices and stories, the culture of the daily life of the cowboy, the challenges of this life, and the drive and desire of the cowboy will be truly understood.

Transcript:

"Do you remember the time when my sister got married to that old NWMP officer?" asked Fred.

"Oh yah I do. And then they retired and they came out West and he wanted to start a ranch. Didn’t they ask your Dad, Charles Stimson to help them start their ranch?" questioned Herb.

"Yah, she told our dad that she didn't have enough money, so she asked for some money to go start their ranch."

"Fred do you remember when your dad asked you to go out and check the land for water, grass, shelter and timber?" asked Herb.

"Yah when my dad knew there was good land he, and Andrew Allen put their money together to purchase 100,000 acres of land at a penny an acre." replied Fred.

"Fred, I remember when I met you in Chicago and you bought 21 bulls and you hired me to trail them out to the new ranch. People thought we were crazy."
