  Stephen B. Soules - Chair  

Steve recently retired from Esprit Exploration as Senior Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining Esprit Exploration, Steve held various roles over his 11 years with Canadian Hunter Exploration Limited. In his most recent position as Senior Vice President, Finance, Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Secretary of Canadian Hunter, he was actively involved in the successful acquisition of the company by Burlington Resources Inc. Steve also held supervisory and management roles in the areas of Information Technology and Finance at Gulf Canada. He has extensive knowledge of all financial and technical aspects of the Canadian oil and gas industry.

Steve graduated from the University of Guelph's Bachelor of Science program in 1975. He later earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Calgary.

 

  Hugh Fergusson - Chair Fund Raising Committee  
Hugh Fergusson is an independent businessman and corporate director. He is a retired executive who had over 25 years of service with The Dow Chemical Company, an international chemicals company listed on numerous stock exchanges. In 2004, he retired as the Vice President, Hydrocarbons and Energy, after holding several positions within the organization from his original position as Staff Lawyer. Mr. Fergusson is currently the President of Argyle Resources Inc. (a private energy consulting organization) and a senior affiliate of the Implementation & Advisory Group Ltd. (a government relations and project management firm). He is a director of Provident Energy Trust (a TSX and NYSE-listed oil and gas trust), Taylor Gas Liquids NGL Ltd. (the general partner of Taylor NGL Limited Partnership, a TSX-listed issuer), and the Canadian Energy Research Institute. He is a past board member of Dow Chemical Canada Inc., Union Carbide Canada Inc., Petromont Inc., the Gas Processors Association of America and the Petrochemical Feedstock Association of the Americas. Mr. Fergusson received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1970 from McMaster University; a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor in 1973 and in 2006 received the designation of ICD.D. from the Institute of Corporate Directors.  

  Brent Kraus - Treasurer and Chair Audit Committee  
Brent Kraus is lawyer and a partner of Bennett Jones LLP, where he practices in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, capital markets transactions and corporate and commercial law. Brent represents diverse clients in the oil and gas, pipeline, manufacturing and technology sectors, as well as acting for several investment banking firms. Brent obtained his B. Comm. and LL.B. degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and previously served as a law clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada in Ottawa.  

  Garry McKinnon - Chair Policy Committee  
Garry has served in a variety of school and school system educational roles over 35 years including, teacher, guidance counsellor, vice principal, principal, deputy superintendent and superintendent of schools. He retired as Superintendent of Schools in the Golden Hills School Division in August 2003 after having served 25 years in the superintendency.

Since that time, Garry has pursued a number of areas of interest which have included: serving as a sessional instructor in the Graduate Division of Educational Research and the Department of Teacher Preparation at the University of Calgary; co-coordinating the organization of the annual College of Alberta School Superintendents Start Right program for newly appointed school administrators and leadership trainees; co-authoring a module on building effective partnerships for Alberta school principals on behalf of the College of Alberta School Superintendents; facilitating workshops for various groups and organizations; consulting for Alberta Education and participating as a volunteer with a number of community service organizations. He has also on behalf of the Galileo Educational Network Association conducted studies of inquiry-based learning in two Calgary schools, which have been in partnership with the Galileo Educational Network Association.

Garry obtained his B.Ed. and B.Sc. from the University of Saskatchewan, his M.Ed. in Educational Administration from the University of Alberta and his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Brigham Young University. Garry is a founding member and Past President of the Centre for Leadership in Learning and he has also served in executive roles in other organizations promoting leadership and professional development including the Calgary Regional Professional Development Consortium, the Calgary Educational Partnership Foundation and the College of Alberta School Superintendents.

 

  Ann Sherman - Vice-Chair

Ann joined the University of Calgary having in July 2007 and is currently Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Education.  She previously taught for nine years at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, including four years as the Director of the School of Education.  Her teaching here focuses on Educational Leadership at the graduate level.  She has 15 years experience as a high school teacher, an elementary school teacher and a school administrator. She is a past recipient of the Alberta Provincial Teaching Award for excellence in teaching. She has a Graduate Diploma in Educational Leadership and a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction.  Her Ph.D. is from the University of Nottingham in the UK and focused on the perceptions of young children about school.

In the past, Ann has been the director of an international project in Bhutan and directed a large service Learning project where they did work in Jamaica, Romania, Cuba, Mexico and Guatemala.  Her current research focuses on instructional leadership in elementary schools with particular focus on science and mathematics instruction. She is a partner in a million dollar research project sponsored by the Centre for Research on Youth Science Technology and Learning (CRYSTAL).

 

  R. D. (Bob) Steele - Director and Past Chair  

Bob Steele is an Electrical Engineering graduate of the University of Saskatchewan in 1970. Upon graduation Bob joined Imperial Oil working in Canada, the USA and Malaysia. In 1983 he joined Canadian Hunter Exploration Limited and resigned in 1994 to start Stellarton Energy, a new company that combined oil and gas exploration and the oilfield service business. The company grew very successfully until it was completely sold in early 2001. Currently Bob is the CEO of Berens Energy Limited, an exploration and production company based in Calgary.

  Jan Vandenbos - Director  
Jan Vandenbos is a specialist in technology strategy across all fronts. His broad background, which blends both business and technology from a variety of market sectors, represents a range of expertise from infrastructure and security to software development and emerging technologies.

Prior to scheduling.com, Jan established a highly successful infrastructure and software consulting business in the energy and utilities sector. After running his own firm, Jan worked as consultant and advisor in many arenas including ISP services, Telecommunications (Last mile providers), and dot com/click and mortar strategic advisory services. His current endeavors include Health Care ASP initiatives and sitting on boards of Educational research initiatives and new technology firms. As a subject matter expert in information system technology, Jan has participated in numerous speaking engagements and authored several newsletters and technical papers. Jan attended the University of Calgary in Canada.

 

  Sharon Friesen - Director  

Sharon is co-founder and President of the Galileo Educational Network and an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Calgary. Sharon's experience as a teacher includes kindergarten, elementary, junior high and high school. She consults on a wide range of teaching and learning topics related to curriculum reform and school improvement. Her research interests include curriculum theory, curriculum inquiry, professional development, mathematics education, instructional leadership, technology integration and school reform. She has co-authored two books: Back to the Basics of Teaching and Learning: Thinking the World Together, winner of the 2004 AERA Division B Book Award and Curriculum in Abundance. She has also assisted schools to assess their technology requirements to enhance teaching and learning environments. Sharon is a recipient of numerous awards for both research and teaching practice:

* 2007 Pacific Institute of Mathematical Sciences Math Educator of the Year;
* 2005 AERA Book Award for Curriculum Studies;
* 1999 The Alberta Teachers' Association, Educational Research Award;

  Brenda Gladstone - Director  

Brenda is co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of The Galileo Network. Brenda's passion for supporting innovation in education is so that children have opportunities to show what they really know by being engaged in personally relevant, challenging work that has meaning beyond the school. Brenda has a proven track record of initiating, implementing and managing a variety of educational initiatives in collaboration with the business community. Brenda has served on the executive of many not-for-profit boards and organizations such as the Alberta School Boards Association and Calgary Parks and Recreation Board. She is a former public school trustee and co-founder of the Calgary Educational Partnerships Foundation, and Calgary Family Connections Society. Brenda was part of the development team which conceived the Galileo Centre, a professional development centre for Alberta teachers, a precursor to Galileo Network. She also initiated and managed the Career Resource Centres in High school initiative and led development of the Employability Skills Portfolio process now used in several Alberta school districts. Brenda holds an Advanced Graduate Diploma in Project Management and a Masters in Business Administration from Athabasca University.

Brenda is married to Doug and they have three adult children. Jeff is an actor, musician, writer and producer out of Vancouver, Ryan is an actor, writer and director often travelling across Canada, Michael is an associate with a global executive search firm in Calgary.

 

  Albert (Bert) A. Einsiedel, Jr. -Honorary Director  
Before coming to North America in 1968, Bert taught Psychology at Mindanao State University's College of Education in the Philippines. He has a BA from the University of the Philippines, a Masters degree in Psychology from California State University, and a Ph.D. in Psychology from Indiana University.

Bert has held academic positions at the University of Hawaii's Center for Cross Cultural Training and Research, Indiana University-Purdue University's Department of Psychology, Case Western Reserve University's Psychology Department, and Syracuse University's Department of Social and Political Psychology.

In 1982 he and his family moved to Edmonton. Bert joined the University of Alberta, where he is now Professor of Extension and Executive Director of the Institute for Professional Development, a research unit that focuses on the advanced study of continuing professional development. He also teaches Organizational Communications and Applied Research in the Master of Arts in Communications & Technology program. His role in the Faculty of Extension included being Director of the Local Government Studies Program, Business Programs, Protected Areas Management Program, and Associate Dean. He has published several books, book chapters, and a number of articles in fields of Organizational Communication, Continuing Professional Development, and Project Management.

Bert is one of the founding members of the Galileo Board of Directors. He has also served as a member of the Board of the Van Horne Institute, the TELUS Centre for Professional Development, and the Legal Resource Centre at the University of Alberta. Bert was also a member of the IUCN Commission on Environmental Education and the Commission on Parks and Protected Areas Management.

 

  Pat Clifford - Honorary Director  

Pat is co-founder of The Galileo Network and has an extensive teaching background that includes Grades 1 to 12, university undergraduate and graduate classes, and a wide range of teacher in-service topics related to curriculum, school improvement and leadership. For the past thirteen years she has worked in teaching and research partnership with Sharon Friesen. She is a recipient of numerous awards for both research and teaching practice:

  • 2005 AERA Book Award for Curriculum Studies
  • 1999 The Alberta Teachers' Association, Educational Research Award;
  • 1999 Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence;
  • 1997 Aoki Award for educational research;
  • 1996 ASCD Celebrating Educational Successes in Alberta award;
  • 1994 National Institute Award for Technology Integration;
  • 1991 Alberta Excellence in Teaching finalist.

She has collaborated on three research projects funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. As a teacher-researcher, she has published in scholarly journals such as Harvard Educational Review and The Journal of Curriculum Theory and in books on issues in educational reform. She has presented at local, provincial, national and international conferences including The Coalition of Essential Schools Fall Forum in Washington, November 2002. She has co-authored with Dr. Sharon Friesen and Dr. David Jardine: "Back to the Basics of Teaching and Learning: Thinking the World Together". The book re-examines the traditional 'basics' of teaching in the light of interpretive inquiry. Most recently, her work has centreed on the role of inquiry and technology in teaching and learning. She has a Ph.D. in Educational Policy and Administrative Studies from the University of Calgary.

 

  Annette LaGrange - Past Director and Past Vice-Chair  
Dr. Annette LaGrange is the Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Calgary and past President of the Canadian Association of Deans of Education. She has been a member of the Faculty of Education, University of Calgary for the last 13 years. Dr. LaGrange has won numerous awards and most recently was awarded an Honorary Life-time membership with the Alberta Teachers Association, Early Childhood Council.

Dr. LaGrange has worked with several international groups related to educational development. Currently she is involved with the Project Steering Committee, Kosovo Educational Development Project/CIDA.

She has extensive experience as a classroom teacher and administrator. Dr. LaGrange's areas of research interest include early childhood education, teacher education, and teacher certification.

  Stephen Murgatroyd - Past Director and Past Chair  
Dr. Stephen Murgatroyd graduated from Open University of the United Kingdom in 1972. In 1973 he joined the Open University as a research fellow. This led Stephen to becoming Senior Counsellor with the Open University in Wales where he obtained a Masters of Philosophy degree in 1983.

Stephen then took on the position of Associate Editor of the British Journal of Guidance and Counselling and was a founding board member of the British Psychological Society's Counselling Psychology Section - all work which earned him a Fellowship of the British Psychological Society (FBPsS) in 1985. A doctorate looking at reversal theory as the basis for therapeutic practice followed in 1987.

In 1986, Stephen joined Athabasca University as Dean of the Faculty of Administrative Studies. He later became the first Executive Director of the Centre for Innovative Management (CIM). His work here led to a Honorary Doctorate in e-learning from Athabasca University in 2000. In 1998 he left the University to join Axia NetMedia. As a Vice President, he ran Axia's Lifeskills International Ltd business in Europe and also managed the development of Citizen Connect LTD - another Axia company.

Stephen has happily returned to Athabasca University as Executive Director, External Relations. The key to this work is building alliances, networks and connections between the University and its publics, developing opportunities for growth while ensuring that its relations with government, non profit organizations, for profit organizations and the public are positive, productive and supportive of the University's strategic intent.

 

  Dawn Giebelhaus-Mains - Past Director  
Dawn Giebelhaus-Mains formerly led the Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP intellectual property and technology practice group in Calgary. Dr. Mains has considerable national and international experience in the fields of intellectual property law (patents, copyrights, trade-marks, industrial designs, trade secrets, integrated circuit topographies), computer law, e-commerce, technology transfer, strategic partnerships, licensing and related international and business transactions and issues of concern to advanced technology businesses. Dawn represents a diversity of clients including those in computer, Internet, oil and gas, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Dawn has recently advised on the implementation of E-Zone Networks' Canadian operations with its customers, particularly in the area of product licensing and brand protection. Dawn has also advised a major software vendor with respect to marketing issues on the Internet. Dawn has presented lectures at Mount Royal College, University of Calgary and University of Alberta relating to intellectual property law. Dawn has numerous publications in scientific journals including Cell, Journal of Cell Biology and Journal of Biological Chemistry and has guest lectured in the United States and Europe. Dawn is a member of the Licensing Executives Society International, the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and sits on the Editorial Board of the Canadian Intellectual Property Review, and Biotechnology Legislation Committee.

  Jay Pritchard - Past Director  
Since 1992, Jay Pritchard has been the Associate Superintendent for Foothills School Division. Prior to that, Jay was a senior administrator in a number of schools in the Calgary Board of Education.

Jay received his Bachelor and Master of Education at the University of Calgary and is a Ph.D. applicant at the University of Alberta. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his outstanding contributions to the community including the Alberta Teachers' Association's Award of Excellence and Calgary Board of Education's Administrator of the Year.

Jay is the President of the Center for Leadership in Learning, an organization serving individuals and groups interested in promoting excellence in education. He also serves on the Physical Education Curriculum Committee, Alberta Learning, the Member Services Committee through the Conference of Alberta School Superintendents, the Steering Committee for the University of Lethbridge Masters Cohort and is part of the ATA's Specialist Council Memberships. He is also active in community activities, particularily sports and is a member of the Okotoks Community Association, the High River Chamber of Commerce and the Okotoks Rotary Club.

 

  Karyn Brooks, CA - Past Director  
Karyn is Vice President & Controller of Bell Canada. Prior to that date, she held various senior financial positions with TransCanada PipeLines Limited where she was employed for 13 years. She is a Chartered Accountant, having earned her designation when employed by KPMG, and is a member of the Institutes of Chartered Accountants of Alberta and Ontario. Karyn is a member of the Emerging Issues Committee of the CICA and is the Chair of the Committee on Corporate Reporting of Financial Executives International (Canada). She also sits on the Accounting Principles Committee of the American Gas Association. She was a member of the CICA's study group on accounting for rate-regulated enterprises and the Alberta Securities Commission's Taskforce on disclosures by oil and gas companies. She has a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours from Queen's University and has attended the Queen's Executive Program.  

  Drew McNaughton - Past Director  
Drew McNaughton brought his passion for detail and love of challenge to his role as a member of the Alberta Government ICT subcommittee that recommended the province create an extensive broadband network (SuperNet). A qualified systems engineer, and graduate of Queens University Executive Management Program, McNaughton brings 20 years experience to managing the network operations and business applications infrastructure that will ensure the successful completion of Axia's role in building the largest broadband network in North America. He currently sits on the boards of Canterra Seed and Canterra Ventures (Winnipeg), 7CZSatellite (Bermuda), Kanatek (Ottawa), and the Galileo Education Network (Alberta).
